After having my first two babies in the hospital, I realized that I wanted to be involved in the care of pregnant and birthing women. At first, I thought the avenue I would pursue was nursing, but then I realized that while I would love to be a part of births in that setting, I wouldn't get the privilege of experiencing the whole pregnancy journey from beginning to end with these women. I wanted to be more involved in their overall care. My husband suggested medical school and the path into obstetrics, but that didn't feel right either. It was then that I stumbled across birth story after birth story of women giving birth in their homes, attended by midwives. Aha! This is what I was looking for! So after much research, I found the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery in Gainesville, Florida. In addition to 3 years of academic studies, I got to attend births in both home and birth center settings. During this time, I was also blessed to give birth to two more children, one just prior to my starting school, and one halfway through school - and both were incredible, empowering home births with midwives. I was again blessed to have my third home birth to my fifth child (and my only girl!) in February 2012, and finally the addition of our 6th child, another boy, in August of 2014, another great home birth.
I am excited to practice here in the St. Augustine area and have the opportunity to help guide women in this community to have their own empowering birth experiences in the comfort of their own homes.
